|
|
My Son bought an M80 while on vacation last year in Myrtle Beach, SC with the intention of giving it to me for my birthday. To make a long story short, he put it in the basement and forgot about it until this year. I got it for my birthday last week. I have always talked about wanting a kite but have never owned one, let alone fly one. Which brings up several questions.
1. When I opened the bag and started to put the kite together I discovered that the small "standoff" rod located near the right wing tip is broken. I can't find out what size that rod is or what it is made of and also it seems to be glued in the connector. Assuming I can purchase the rod, how do I get it out of the connector in order to replace it? I will have to purchase it on-line, as it appears the closest kite store is almost five hours away. WV has some beautiful scenery but I guess no kite stores.
2. There are two pieces of black mesh, 6 1/2" X 10", and no mention of them in the directions. Looks like two of the larger "standoffs" could slide through them, but that is only a guess. What are they for?
3. Is the M-80 going to be difficult for a first time newbie?
4. Have looked at all of the articles in the forum and have not seen any mention of the M-80. Why is that?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone might be able to provide.

You will need to replace the connector as well. Outer standoff spec are as follows - 2mm fiberglass x 19 cm.

World Wind Kites will be able to replace the standoff for you if you can find no other (www.worldwindkites.com). WV - what a great place to enjoy the great outdoors!

You are correct! They are air breaks and can be used to slow the kite down in high winds.

No harder than any other sport kite. It has a robust frame so durability will not be an issue. You will need to know the basics of setting up and flying a sport kite.
a. Let out all the line before launching
b. Make sure your lines are of equal length
c. etc....

New Tech no longer manufactures the M-80. There is less talk about it since it is no longer available in stores.
I hope this helps.
Cheers,

Hi Chris,
Thank you so very much for---The very rapid response, The belated birthday wish, and all the helpful information.
Can't wait to get the new part and attempt to get the kite "in the air". Those wind brakes will probably get lots of use, as one of the things we have plenty of, is wind. I live on top of a mountain here in WV and there are 10 acres of flat land around my home with no obstructions. Canaan Valley is a ski resort, and is the highest valley east of the mississippi river. My home is about 600 feet above the valley.
Is there somewhere I can get info regarding the parts list for the M-80? I am assuming that I will probably break a few pieces in the learning process. Or, would I be better off purchasing a different kite to learn on?
Thanks again,
Tom |

Wet & wild West Virginia. Been there a number of times. Past by Canaan Valley on the way to Elkins, but never took the detor. I've heard it is spectacular.
Here are the rest of the specs on the M-80.

Chris,
Thank you for the info on the M-80. I am sure it will come in handy.
I spoke with Tye from WorldWindKites and ordered the standoff. He said he has spoken with you on several occasions. WOW! What a great company to deal with. He took my address and will ship the part. Also had a nice conversation with him and picked up a lot of good pointers. To say I am excited about trying out the M-80 is an understatement.
Thanks again,
Tom |
